Were these girls to line up in front of you, they'd look like a maniac's imagining of Girls Aloud, so strange looking are Tunstall, Bats for Lashes, and Harvey. Still, who cares about those chicks, when it's horse-faced Leona Lewis who's got it in the nose-bag already?

Or has she?

Leona Lewis
Despite her talent-show background, Lewis is not going the Butlins/cruise ships /suicide route normally expected of X Factor winners. No way, Jose. Bleeding Love was the best selling single of 2007 - a likely contender for the Best Single award - and she is being touted as the most likely star to crack America, where they love listening to her token brand of crazy high pitched warbling when they're face-deep in a vat of deep fried beefburgers. The only artist in her category with a chart topper, the favourites tend to win (Winehouse, last year; Dido, 2004, 2002).

Kate Nash
Another horrible mockney 'oi oi' stage school kid who sing/talks like she's doing a bad impression of Del Boy, Kate Nash looks unlikely to win. Lily Allen - a superior version of Nash - failed last year, and, unlike Lewis, she hasn't yet topped the charts. Her biggest hit, Foundations, stalled at number two, and the awards tend to go to the biggest name in the group. She is an ungodly imp.

KT Tunstall
KT will be looking to be the fifth lady to scoop the prize more than once (Annie Lennox, 1984, 1986, 1989, 1990, 1993, 1996; Alison Moyet, 1985, 1988; Lisa Stansfield, 1991, 1992; Dido, 2002, 2004). She once got in trouble for insisting that Dido "can't fucking sing" (good point), her last single - Saving My Face - charted at number 50, and it would take some very unorthodox voting to see her beat Lewis.

Bat For Lashes
The problem for Bat For Lashes is that no one will know who she is, unless, of course, they are just as achingly cool themselves - which no one is. Described as a "visual artist", Jarvis Cocker is a fan, as is lazy-eyed Radiohead front man Thom Yorke. A victory would cause the biggest upset since Belle and Sebastian pipped Steps to the Best Newcomer award (1999). A horrible day for music, that one.

PJ Harvey
Like Bat for Lashes, PJ is probably a bit too odd to win - she has, after all, won the Mercury Music Prize (2001). In the years since Kate Bush won in 1987, the Best Females have tended to be a little more middle of the road. Harvey is a weirdo.
